A bed is where every day begins and ends, so it deserves more than particle board and a quick coat of paint. In our workshop in Kengtawng, Shan State, we build carved teak beds and full bedroom suites from solid Burmese teak — timber chosen for its golden grain, natural oils and a calm, grounding presence that turns a bedroom into a true retreat.

Why solid Burmese teak belongs in the bedroom

Burmese teak is prized the world over for good reason. Its dense fibre and naturally high oil content make it remarkably resistant to water, humidity and termites — the very things that quietly destroy ordinary bedroom furniture over the years. A well-made teak bed does not creak, sag or loosen at the joints; it simply settles in and grows more beautiful as the surface deepens to a warm honey-amber tone.

Because teak is so stable, it is the ideal canvas for carving. The wood holds a crisp edge, so floral borders, lattice panels and relief motifs stay sharp for decades rather than blurring or chipping. Everything we make is solid teak throughout — not veneer over cheaper cores — which is why these pieces are genuinely built to pass from one generation to the next.

The craft behind every bed

Each bed begins as rough-sawn planks that we season slowly to stabilise the timber before a single cut is made. Our carvers then work the headboard and posts entirely by hand, following patterns drawn for that specific design. The frames are assembled with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery — strong, time-tested connections that need no reliance on metal brackets — then hand-sanded through many grades and finished with oils that let the natural grain glow rather than hiding it under heavy lacquer.

We do not rush a headboard. A single carved panel can take days, because the difference between good and heirloom-quality lies entirely in the patience.

The headboard is the heart of a teak bed, and it is where our carvers do their finest work. From bold floral crowns to restrained geometric lattice, each headboard is shaped to anchor the room. Because it is solid teak, the carving has real depth — light and shadow move across it through the day.
